WORLD AIDS DAY

On December 1st, 2012, GCAP will be hosting a candlelight vigil in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of World AIDS Day. In an event themed “Getting to Zero” GCAP is hoping to not only spread awareness of the constant presence of HIV/AIDS but they are also hoping to remind the public of the continuing need for treatment and support for those living with the virus.

With the help of volunteers, community members and speakers, GCAP will be hosting a candlelight vigil in West Side Park on Saturday December 1st, 2012 at 4:30pm. Community members are encouraged to come and light a candle in commemoration of those who have been lost and of those who are still fighting HIV/AIDS.

GCAP has been spreading awareness and supporting those living with HIV/AIDS since 1985. Therefore, it is incredibly important to the organization that the public is aware of the success of World AIDS Day and its contribution to society. In the past 25 years, World AIDS Day has inspired nations across the globe to work together in order to stop the spread of the virus and to raise awareness. With varying themes throughout the years, such as “Women and AIDS” and “I care, do you?”, this years theme of “Getting to Zero” further promotes the goal of a society that is HIV/AIDS free.

In May 2012, several developments coming out of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are noteworthy for those in higher-risk categories for HIV infection. The first is a new prescription drug which may help decrease the risk of infection; the second is new in-home tests for early detection.

Prescription drug for HIV prevention recommended

MAY 10, 2012 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Antiviral Drugs Advisory Committee has recommended Truvada (tenofovir plus emtricitabine) for approval as the first prescription drug—to be used daily and in conjunction with condoms and other safer-sex measures—to prevent HIV among those at risk for the infection.

Though the FDA is not required to follow the approval recommendations of its independent advisory committees, it usually does so. The agency is expected to announce its decision on or before June 15.

For more information, please see: http://www.aidsmeds.com/articles/hiv_truvada_prep_1667_22382.shtml

In-Home HIV Test Gets Unanimous Approval Recommendation

MAY 10, 2012 — Orasure’s oral swab-based rapid in-home HIV test has been recommended for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Blood Products Advisory Committee. If the FDA follows its advisory committee’s recommendation, the Oraquick In-Home HIV Test will be the first complete home-based screening assay for any infectious disease available for purchase over-the-counter (OTC) from pharmacies and internet retailers.

For more information, please see: http://www.aidsmeds.com/articles/hiv_oraquick_test_1667_22405.shtml
